We are a national organization of professional engineers that serve as role models and leaders in the Hispanic community. Founded in 1974, SHPE (pronounced "ship") has developed into a prominent and significant presence in the professional world. Today, SHPE maintains a strong network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation, including ours at SCU. Come get involved in this ever-growing movement!

Michael Valencia, a staff member in Admissions, came to five students with the idea of creating a student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Santa Clara University.
The chapter was reconstructed to create new positions and opportunities. The new name became ChALESS (Chicanos And Latinos in Engineering and Science at SCU).
A record 56 members. Our chapter was awarded the "Chapter of the Year Award" from SHPE Silicon Valley Region 1.
Name of the chapter was changed once more in order to have a common and recognizable name by everyone. It is now called Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Santa Clara University. (SHPE-SCU)
We refreshed the SHPE-SCU brand to represent all engineering disciplines in a modern, clean manner.
Our chapter was awarded the blue chip award at the regional conference.
At the SHPE national convention, our chapter was recognized as the most improved chapter nationwide.
We adopted a new story brand with a mission that aligns us with that of our national organization.
We said goodbye to our SHPE-SCU logo and adopted the new SHPE national logo.
Our chapter continues to stay true to the mission to discover and create opportunities in STEM to help you get to where you wish to be academically, personally, and professionally.
Studying STEM in Silicon Valley can be overwhelming as a Hispanic. SHPE at SCU is a familia that helps you find your way. We provide you with the tools and support needed to focus on your ambitions and escape the pressure of going through it alone.
We are intent on building a community to support each other.
We find it is important to give back to our community, so we volunteer and reach out to youth to spark an interest in STEM.
We provide academic advice including how to register for classes and which classes to take. We also study together.
We know that being in STEM is hard, and resilience becomes important in learning from our mistakes and failing forward.
